I want to look like my Father.
To have His kind eyes, His gentle humor, His tender heart.
I want to carry on His name;
To be fruitful with His blessing;
To receive the inheritance He has lovingly crafted for me.
I want to walk in His guidance;
To hear the tales of His glory days;
To learn from His stories of mystery and wonder as He softly sings me to sleep.
I want to look like my Friend.
To embody His steadfast countenance, His joyful contentment, His enduring peace.
I want to bring Him gifts of thanksgiving;
To watch His hands as they work in beautiful obedience to the needs of His loved ones;
To celebrate His presence on a path paved by aromatic crowns of the wild.
I want to go on adventures with Him;
To fish in the rivers of His homeland;
To dine with Him in the breaking of fresh bread and the drinking of sweet wine.
I want to look like my Teacher.
To feel the warmth of His presence, the ease of His company, the refreshment of His whispering voice.
I want to glean from His careful instruction;
To be encouraged by His patient authority;
To sit at His feet as He explains the secrets of wisdom.
I want to do great works with Him;
To be empowered by His gifts of sustaining grace;
To dwell with Him in the house of freedom.
Biblical Context
Yahweh, Yeshua, and Ruach ha-kodesh are the Hebrew words meaning Lord, Jesus, and Holy Spirit - the three Persons composing the unified trinity of God upon whom this poem is centered. Each Person of the trinity plays a unique role in the life of a born-again believer as they work in beautiful synchronicity with one another.
Father: "Jesus gave them this answer: “Very truly I tell you, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does"(John 5:19); "Yet you, LORD, are our Father. We are the clay, you are the potter; we are all the work of your hand" (Isaiah 64:8); "See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him" (1 John 3:1); "If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!" (Matthew 7:11).
Friend: "On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh" (Matthew 2:11); "Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. “I am willing,” he said. “Be clean!” And immediately the leprosy left him" (Luke 5:13); “They took palm branches and went out to meet him, shouting,’ Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Blessed is the king of Israel!’” (John 12:13); “Come, follow me,' Jesus said, 'and I will send you out to fish for people'" (Matthew 4:19); “And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, ‘This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me.’ In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, ‘This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you’” (Luke 22:19-20).
Teacher: “I baptize you with water for repentance. But after me comes one who is more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire" (Matthew 3:11); "Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters" (Genesis 1:2); "But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you" (John 14:26); "Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom" (2 Corinthians 3:17); "Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies" (1 Corinthians 6:19-20); "There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them" (1 Corinthians 12:4).
